Well come on, it wouldn't be a blog about Japan without some Engrish posts would it. I bought some Udon from the supermarket the other day (although they were labelled as Udong so it seems Tesco have their own translation issues). Anyway on the packet there's a rather lovely sentence...

"We will try our best with quality preference principle in the future"

NB: The noodles were actually produced in Korea! I'm not sure Udon is specifically a Japanese dish but it's where I know them from.

Because I didn't post it before... あけましておめでとうございます!or Happy New Year.

Hatsumode is the first visit to a shrine in the New Year. Usually on the first few days of January before returning to work. I myself have not yet experienced hatsumode but I've read that it insanely busy.

Here's a picture I took at of the torii (gate) at Meiji Jingu in 2009.

No, seriously.

Why is it Pocky Day? well because Pocky looks like lots of 1's. I, like most people, am a big fan of Pocky although I haven't tried that many flavours so far. I do love the regular strawberry ones though.

Asakusa is one of the more popular tourist spots in Tokyo, although I didn't make it there until my second trip. It's one of the older style districts and lies on the banks of the Sumida-gawa (Sumida River).

It's probably most famous for either Senso-ji (the famous Buddhist temple) or the golden statue that lies outside the Asahi beer building, modelled on a flame but more commonly called the unko building (I'll leave you to translate that yourselves).

So anyway.... this is the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate):

So it's pretty common knowledge around the blogosphere by now that the Japanese Government are offering 10,000 free tickets to Japan in 2012 to try and re-stimulate tourism numbers lost after the March 11th Earthquake and everything that followed. It seems they are willing to pay for return flights but nothing (accommodation, food, spending money etc) in between which is a fair deal I'd say.. and I'll definitely apply.

The last I heard the proposal had been approved by the Government and early next year people will be able to apply. Apparently you need:

- A firm plan of your intended travel (and itinerary) during your stay.
- To write a report of some sort upon return saying what you gained from the trip.
- To be a blogger?

The third one has a question mark because as far as I've read, they are specifically targeting bloggers and people with considerable internet clout to spread the word that Japan is a safe place for tourists, how much clout is needed is not clear as of yet.

Either way, I'm doing my bit by spreading the word.

So I'm going to start posting my photographs from my trips starting at the beginning, this is Odaiba, April 2008.

It's probably one of my favourite places in Tokyo, if not my actual favourite. I think it's something to do with it being the first place I stayed/saw when visiting Japan for the first time. I stayed in the Meridian Grand Pacific Hotel which overlooked the bay. It was a really great hotel, outside it was attached to the Yurikamome station which would take you into Tokyo within 20 minutes, there was a 24 hour conbini (convenience store) at ground level and it had a truly amazing view.

A bit of general info: Odaiba is situated in Tokyo Bay, just across the Rainbow Bridge from Tokyo Central. To get to the centre for shopping, gaming and eating take the Yurikamome (which gives amazing views over the bay as it makes its way over the bridge) from Shimbashi and get off at Daiba-eki (Daiba Station).

I personally think a day trip to Odaiba is a necessity when visiting Tokyo. It also looks wonderful at night when the bridge is lit up and you can see across the bay.

It's no lie that I love Haruki Murakami. Since I first read my first Murakami novel After Dark in 2008 it would be fair to say I was hooked. You can see I have a quote at the top of this blog and the title of the blog is actually another novel. I usually say South of the Border, West of the Sun is my favourite, which isn't a lie but sometimes I suddenly read a quote and remember how much I love some of the others.

Anyway, the point of this was because his new (1000 page I might add) novel 1Q84 is out this month. Books 1 & 2 on the 18th and Book 3 on the 24th. I wish they were doing it all together to be honest but that's a minor detail.

I cannot wait.

Oh and for anyone who would like to try and win his back catalogue (which you should) you can enter a writing competition here, to be judged by Murakami-san's publisher.

If I had not been born with this last name, I wonder if my life would have taken a different shape. For example, if I had a common name like Sato, Tanaka or Suzuki, I might lead a bit more of a relaxed life and look upon the world with a bit more of a magnanimous eye. - Aomame (1Q84)

So having gone through various blogging sites and trying them out I decided sometimes it's best to stick with what you know. So I'm back on LJ, albeit on a different account from my personal one. This will be my Japan dedicated one. During the time when I'm still here (here being England) I'll mainly post things I find interesting about Japan, also (probably) pictures and various details about my trips there, my attempt at learning the language and how I'm coping with working through a degree in Literature (relevant in that I need it to actually get a visa/job) Eventually I'm hoping I'll actually be posting from Japan.

The above picture is my first view of Japan, if you don't count the airport which I'm choosing not to, mainly because I don't have any pictures of it. So, it seemed an apt way to start this thing. Mostly, I remember it was really sunny and warm, much warmer than I’d expected. In my semi-concious jet-lagged state I watched the houses and fields as they flew past, trying to stay awake so as not to miss anything, but failing. This photo brings back the exact feeling though, I can remember the warm sun, the excitement and the exhaustion.
